Remote Access Security Tips

With the continuing advent of new technologies and ways of communicating, it is important to remember that with new technologies come associated new security threats. One of the newer, most utilized technologies to date in the business environment has been remote computing. Remote access has quickly become a wide-spread technology used throughout multiple industries in the marketplace today. The inherent efficiencies realized through remote computing have been tremendous. The ability to work remotely, access secure work networks, and hold meetings from any Internet-connected device, however, has been both a blessing and a curse. With the advent of mass-marketed downloadable programs such as pcAnywhere and GoToMyPC, remote access has quickly become the “weak link” in otherwise...

Natural disasters and PositivePRO

An off topic post for me, but as a victim of the European airspace shutdown thanks to the Icelandic volcano whose name I cannot even pronounce, we felt that it was imperative that I discuss my experience with our readers.

By now, I am sure that you have heard of the volcano that erupted in Iceland. It sent a huge plume of ash and dust into the atmosphere where it happily floated over to Europe where I was attending a wedding with my family. Now, I am not here to give you a science lesson, but long story short - European airspace was closed and I was stranded.

Every flight to and from Europe was cancelled, and I had no idea when I would be able to get home, not only to my pets, but also to my job. Lets face it, when you are stranded somewhere, you cannot expect...

Why companies expand remote access to everyone

Employees are really feeling the pinch these days. Cutbacks due to the recession mean that remaining workers are being asked to do more with less. Couple that with general feelings of unease over job security and you’ve got the recipe for declining employee morale. Short of the company getting healthier as the economy improves, there isn’t a magic bullet to improve employee morale. Or is there?

A recent survey conducted by Cisco had some surprising results. Cisco was trying to learn how many businesses could enable all their employees to work remotely in the event of a natural disaster, pandemic or weather related cause. They discovered that 3 out of 4 organizations were not set up for sudden expansion of remote access to all employees. The surprising part of the...

The Importance of Remote Access From Non-Company owned PCs

As I watched reports of the east coast getting hammered by the blizzard, I wondered how many employees wouldn't make it to work.  Events like this remind me how beneficial our PositivePRO Cloud-based remote access really is.

It's widely accepted that remote access is still one of the best technologies to improve worker productivity.  Something to keep in mind when deploying remote access is that more and more individuals want to access company information from their own PC or laptop.   This is especially true of younger workers.  An increasing number of IT staffs recognize that supporting remote access from non-company issued devices is a requirement.  However, allowing such access presents unique security and support challenges.  How can security be assured?  Does the...
