Why companies expand remote access to everyone

Employees are really feeling the pinch these days. Cutbacks due to the recession mean that remaining workers are being asked to do more with less. Couple that with general feelings of unease over job security and you’ve got the recipe for declining employee morale. Short of the company getting healthier as the economy improves, there isn’t a magic bullet to improve employee morale. Or is there?
A recent survey conducted by Cisco had some surprising results. Cisco was trying to learn how many businesses could enable all their employees to work remotely in the event of a natural disaster, pandemic or weather related cause. They discovered that 3 out of 4 organizations were not set up for sudden expansion of remote access to all employees. The surprising part of the survey was the REASON why 1 out of 4 companies established capabilities to let all employees work from home. While business continuity in the event of an unforeseen circumstance was important, 71 percent of these companies cited improving employee productivity and better work/life balance as a primary reason. Especially in times of stress, employees value flexibility and the ability to work efficiently from home from time to time. Companies that have robust solutions to enable secure and easy to use remote access are improving employee morale AND reducing the risk of business disruption.
