PCI Compliance is a Helpful Hassle

One of my favorite summertime activities is camping with my family.  Campfires, hiking, outdoor cooking and just unplugging from the daily grind.  We camp in a 30' RV which really blurs the line between camping and staying at a hotel.  The RV has air conditioning, shower/bathroom, and a full kitchen.  It's far from roughing it!

 

Operating an RV is actually pretty easy but there are some mandatory requirements.  Last weekend I finished my annual ritual of preparing the RV for winter storage.  It's a bit of a hassle.  You need to drain the fresh water system and then add 5 gallons of RV anti-freeze.  The solution needs to flow completely through all the PVC plumbing in the unit.  That prevents the pipes from bursting when the temperature goes below freezing.  This...

These days when teams get together to discuss risk scenarios, the focus tends to be on facilities (ie What if disaster strikes?) and suppliers (ie What if we cannot get the materials we need to produce our product or service?).  Epidemics or pandemics rarely enter the thought process.  The recent outbreak of H1N1, commonly known as the swine flu, is forcing business managers to consider risks to their primary resource – their employees. 

 

SMBs are especially susceptible to the negative economic impacts of a flu pandemic.  Considering that many are fighting to stay afloat as it is, H1N1 combined with the recession, has the potential to create a perfect storm.

Harriett Beecher Stowe once wrote that “Common sense is the knack of seeing things as they are, and doing things as they ought to be done.”  

 

Most of us take a common sense approach to everyday life.  For example, before leaving for work in the morning, we unplug the iron and lock the front door.  That reduces the chance of burning down the house or having someone steal your stuff.   You don’t need a reminder…it’s just common sense.

 

So why is it so different with information security?  There’s a tendency for companies to put all their focus on implementing the latest security technology and not enough focus on common sense preventative measures.
