Systems Engineer & Systems Administrator

Function:

Implement and Maintain Corporate Systems (Linux and Operations management emphasis)

Reports To:

Operations Manager


Job Description:

  • Provide systems administration for multiple systems environments with emphasis on RedHat Linux systems including operating system, Xen Virtualization, (VM) and VMware ESX
  • Installs, configures, maintains and performs system integration testing of Unix based operating systems, related utilities and hardware.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting Unix-based hardware and software problems.
  • Monitors systems activities and fine tunes system parameters and configuration to optimize performance and ensure security of systems.
  • Performs capacity analysis, monitors and controls usage of disk space.
  • Develops procedures for routine administration including backup/restore, shutdown, and startup.
  • Provides recommendations for improving the server environment, such as capacity thresholds, security gaps, patch levels and hardware recalls.
  • Plans and implements new systems infrastructure including defining architecture, test plan to stage, testing and migration to production
    • By project, works with the applications development team to define the infrastructure through the Systems Development Life Cycle
    • Design, develop, modify, document, analyze, release, test IT infrastructure to support requirements
    • Consult with development and/or users, as appropriate, to determine hardware, software or systems functional specifications
  • Impact analysis for production changes and development of production change requests.
  • Secondary responsibilities:
    • Provide desktop/server support for Microsoft operating systems (Windows XP, Windows Server 2003,2007) and applications including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Typically has 5 to 7 years of IT work experience.
  • Requires a high level of expertise in multiple system environments with emphasis in Linux-based systems.
  • 3-5 years RedHat Linux operating system knowledge
  • 3-5 years script writing (Linux, Nagios, and Shell programming)
  • 3-5 years implementing and maintaining systems monitoring (eg. Nagios and/or others)
  • 3-5 years IPSec tunnel development/management experience

Desirable skills:

  • 2-4 years system administration experience desired (VMWare, Active Directory, LDAP)
  • 2-4 years Microsoft operating system
  • 2-4 years Windows 2003 Sever experience
  • 2-4 years SAN administration and engineering experience

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems, or equivalent experience/education
  • Desirable Certifications: Red Hat Certified Engineer, VMware certification, Linux+
